It’s ok to answer your boss with “I don’t know” stated Mr. John Mensch of First Security Insurance. He was the guest speaker to the CEO class on Thurs, 26 Sep. However, don’t end there but follow it immediately with “I will find the answer and get back with you”. This was just an example of the many points John made. He provided an outline of important areas he felt the students could benefit from as they began thinking about their start-up. He stated there were four crucial sides to business: management, marketing, accounting, and financing. All four must be practiced and considered if a business is to be successful. John provided background on how he eventually moved to Bloomfield after growing up in Ohio and serving as a commissioned officer in the Navy. Taking an aptitude test indicated he would be good at selling insurance and after being provided start up funds from a fellow officer, acted on that information and with that investment began a successful company with branches located in several counties. He emphasized the importance of hard work and establishing relationships when starting a business. He also provided some insights learned while serving in the Navy, both on active duty and reserve. He brought his granddaughter, Freshman Brilee, to the class as well to hear what he had to say. She was a welcome addition. However, while they were there, we had a Brilee, Braylee, Brayden and Brianna in addition to AJ, Catie and Jennifer!
