One of the biggest lessons in business—and in life—is learning how to read the room.

Our students have worked nonstop all year. Since Christmas break, they’ve written and rewritten their business plans, presented them to a room full of bankers, met with mentors, and had several business site visits and guest speakers. They’ve perfected and videoed their 30-second and 3-minute pitches (over and over again) and presented to area judges.

On Wednesday, they showed it all: pride, exhaustion, excitement—sometimes all at once. When it was all over, it was time for me, as facilitator, to read the room. Time to breathe, unwind, and connect before our next big event: the Trade Show on April 19th.

You should have seen the cheers, the smiles, and the high fives—when I told them Thursday’s class would be breakfast at Gary’s Restaurant in Freeburg. (Yes, cheers for casual day too!)

They still all showed up before 7 a.m., ready to relax and celebrate. Once everyone was settled, we had a brief recap of Fish Tank. The students applauded each other’s growth, courage, and hard work. David asked, “Who surprised you the most?” Everyone agreed that Michael’s presentation had a little surprise ending that no one had heard—and it absolutely was awesome!

Some dug into biscuits and gravy, others devoured waffles piled with whipped cream and fruit. Eli even said, “Laurie, you’ve got to order Eric’s special. It’s what I get every time I come here!”

And everyone laughed when Collin ordered two giant waffles—he said, “I have to get one to take home with me!”

Then Sadeem pulled out her pens and started painting temporary henna designs on classmates arms—no one had any idea she had such amazing hidden talent!

We chatted with other patrons about our program, and the students confidently shared their experiences, spreading the word about Silver Creek Area CEO. One patron even said, “Ohhh, are you Silver Creek Area CEO? I’ve seen your posts on Facebook and I LOVE what your program is about!”

Thursday was just another reminder why we do this. The long hours, the nerves, the hard work—it’s all worth it. These students are growing as entrepreneurs, yes, but more importantly, as people. And we are a family. ❤️

I couldn’t be prouder. Breakfast, cheers, waffles, henna, surprise endings, and confidence included!
